AP Response

Mary Oliver uses imagery, intricate sentence structure, and juxtapostion to explain her complex response to nature.

She uses imagery, particularly metaphors and concrete nouns to highlight how dangerous a predator the great horned owl is by emphasizing the “ . . razor-tipped toes, ” “ snapping of his hooked beak,” and “insatiable craving for the taste of brains. ” These descriptions make the reader believe that the great horned owl is the cruel and sadistic master of his domain, mercilessly, not just attacking, but also torturing its prey, by taking only the heads of his victims. Interestingly, this particular great horned owl is male; thus the imagery reminds me of the main characters of slasher movies, such as Halloween or The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
